Yavapai County Withdraws from
Red Rock Crossing ControversyAt the April 20, 1998 Yavapai County Board of Supervisors meeting in Cottonwood, Arizona, Supervisors voted 2 to 1 to ask the U. S. Forest Service to return the balance of $165,000 on deposit for the Red Rock Crossing NEPA study.
This decision followed an hour-long discussion of the issue, where the Supervisors reviewed and debated all the options available to the County.
They finally concluded that the best choice for the County was to withdraw from the whole process.
On April 27, 1998, Board Chairman Bill Feldmeier wrote to Sedona District Ranger Ken Anderson requesting the return of the balance of $165,000 the County had given the Forest Service to expedite the NEPA process on the Sedona alternate route proposal. He estimated the current balance at $150,200.
Feldmeier wrote the Board's motion included a statement that local entities should decide what they want to do about an alternate route.
Based on the Board's action of April 20th, he stated, the County was canceling the Memorandum of Understanding between Yavapai County and the Forest Service. This MOU had been approved by the Board on October 21, 1996, and formed the basis for accomplishing work related to the environmental analysis and documentation necessary for the proposed Alternate Crossing of Oak Creek project.
Feldmeier told Anderson that the County was also withdrawing its request for Forest Service review of a bridge design at Red Rock Crossing.
These actions effectively end the Countys involvement in the crossing issue.
